What is the 11+ exam?

Most schools in the UK are now comprehensive schools. These schools accept all students, regardless of aptitude.

Grammar schools, unlike comprehensives are selective schools, they admit students on the basis of academic achievement.

The 11 plus is a test taken by some pupils at the start of Year 6, to determine which students are selected for grammar schools.

In Birmingham, there are 8 grammar schools which are spread across the city. Places are limited and competition for them is intense.

When should you start 11+ tuition for your child?

Children normally join our 11+ programme in year 4 and some start in year 3. The demand for a grammar school place has grown considerably over the years. Starting early gives us every opportunity of building your child’s skills in the core subjects, English and Maths, while introducing them to non-verbal and verbal reasoning.

We do take on year 5 pupils, this approach can work for children who are exceling at school. However, preparing early in year 3 or 4 allows us to work with your child to nurture and create a disciplined study routine at a steady speed, which is more comfortable for your child, relieving the pressure on both pupils and parents when approaching the workload of year 5 and the examination.

The jump from primary to secondary school can be difficult for children, especially to a grammar school. The environment is competitive, full of high achievers. At The Lighthouse Education, we mentor and guide our students to develop motivation and independence in their learning. We do not subscribe to training students to just pass the grammar test. Our approach is to equip students with the skills, knowledge and good study practice to pass any exam, developing methods they can take beyond school, into higher education.
